Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is a private university polyclinic in Rome is the home to the Faculty of Medicine of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. It was ranked Italy’s best hospital for the third consecutive year in Newsweek magazine’s annual ranking in 2023.
It operates as part of the Italian National Health System, as well as providing services in private practice, with its functions not limited to hospital-type activities, but also including scientific research in the medical-biological field, teaching of medical and nursing disciplines, and continuing education of health personnel.
Its “Memory Clinic,” for which Dr. Camillo Marra is in charge, was born from the desire to produce a synergistic effort in order to bring together the different skills of the Areas under a single direction and create pathways and fast lanes to the growing demand for diagnosis and care related to dementia pathology.
The goal of the Memory Clinic Area Simple Unit is to provide patients with suspected dementia with a rapid framing service through preferential access to the first “neuropsychogeriatric examinations” that are conducted at the CEMI outpatient clinic. Within the Memory Clinic, various caregivers coexist (neurologist, geriatrician, psychologist, cognitive rehabilitator, speech therapist) who intervene for their expertise at various moments in the clinical history of the patient with dementia.
Within the Memory Clinic, services are carried out for the first neuopsychogeriatric examination, neuropsychological testing for the assessment of cognitive function, formulation of treatment plans for patients with dementia, geriatric and neuropsychological follow-up visits, genetic counseling activities for familial forms of dementia, rehabilitation programs for cognitive disorders, and specific speech therapy activities for language and mnestic disorders amenable to specific treatment.
