Reflecting the need of Cyprus for high level laboratory and clinical services The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) commenced operations in 1990 and since then it has been performing the most competitive and innovative biomedical research in the island aiming towards early detection and prevention of disease. CING is dedicated to lessening the suffering of patients and their families and preventing diseases through patient care, research on neurological and genetic conditions such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, dementia, chromosomal abnormalities and all other aspects of molecular biology and genetics such as thalassaemia, molecular virology, mental retardation, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cystic fibrosis and neurogenetics.
Furthermore, in 2012 CING established its postgraduate School offering MSc and PhD degrees related to the research and academic interests relevant to its activities becoming one of the first and today one of the best, examples in Europe where postgraduate education, research and service are successfully combined.
Also, in collaboration with the Cyprus Muscular Dystrophy Association, TELETHON– an international charitable campaign- was organised in 1994 and since then many fundraising events throughout the year are organised with all proceeds of Telethon Cyprus supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Cyprus and the research programs of the Institute.
